Mr. PHP and MySql and Jargon you don't understand. Building your own website- The Bare Bones Basics

spamlandNowadays everyone has a web presence. Be it through Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Youtube or any combination thereof. It seems that the general level of "web savvy" has increased, yeah?

Actually, programmers have spent hundreds if not thousands of hours creating the php, CSS, xhtml, Ajax calls, and styling to make it feel like the end user "really has a grasp on the internet" "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain".

Musicians- Your MYSPACE Page Isn't Cutting It.

hammerhead-thanks-to-pollsb.comWho here remembers MySpace? (raise your hand) Well obviously too many musicians seem to be stuck in that vacuum of time from the "double ont" (00) era. MySpace, depending upon your perspective either helped the music business or drove yet another nail in the coffin of music MAKING.

I've been a professional musician my entire working life; There's not much I have not seen or done in the realm of playing music. Play in front of 80,000 people? Check. Met and hung out with major rockstars? Check. Played all the world's finest music festivals? Yep, been there, done that.

So it drives me crazy to hear an otherwise "good band" and to find out their only interface to the "outside world" is through that portal known as MySpace. My respect just goes out the window.

Thoughts on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

confused"SEO"...a big buzz word on the scene today, it would seem. Search Engine Optimization starts with very basic principles- relevant content! If your site contains relevant content, chances are you'll be found! Wouldn't you think?

Well it's not so easy anymore. In highly active "vertical markets" such as Real Estate and Online Sales there will be someone who is hiring bloggers, tweeting every 10 seconds, updating their status on the internet 100 times a day and somehow, THEY get to the top of the stack! Frustrates the crap out of you huh?

The Quality Triangle

triangle

There's a concept called "The Quality Triangle". It dictates the following:

You are given the options of Fast, Good and Cheap, and told to pick any two. Here Fast refers to the time required to deliver the product, Good is the quality of the final product, and Cheap refers to the total cost of designing and building the product. This triangle reflects the fact that the three properties of a project are interrelated, and it is not possible to optimise all three – one will always suffer. In other words you have three options:

  • Design something quickly and to a high standard, but then it will not be cheap.
  • Design something quickly and cheaply, but it will not be of high quality.
  • Design something with high quality and cheaply, but it will take a long time.

In other words...consider the dynamics of what you wish the end result to be. Oceansites Web Design understands this balance and have extensive experience in getting your project completed within whatever parameters you have at hand.
